EARLY MUSIC AND DANCE

Much secular Renaissance music has associated dances and songs. In this two-hour workshop participants will learn several period dances including bransles, pavans and almans from Itailian, French and English traditions. The class will conclude with dancing to live music performed by the Borealis consort and guests. No prior dance experience is required, however comfortable shoes are a must. Class size is limited to 24 people. Dance Mistress Cath Jackel has taught Renaissance dance for more than 25 years. The Borealis Consort is a group of Edmonton musicians with a particular interest in renaissance dance music.

LE DONZELLETTE SEMPLICETE

Luigi Rossi (c1597-1653)
Cantata Noi Siam tre Donzellette Semplicete (three simple maidens) for 3 sopranos & basso continuo

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
Works for one, two and three sopranos and continuo.

This concert features a rarely performed and very comical cantata for 3 sopranos and continuo by Luigi Rossi. The cantata tells the story of three sisters who are on their way home from a party and laughingly re-enacting their favourite parts of the evening. They remember which songs and dances they liked best, discuss the fashion faux-pas of the party, and compare the pick-up lines used by men trying to woo them.

All three singers will perform secular solo works and duos by Claudio Monteverdi as well.

It promises to be an amazing concert!
